Travelogue - Nagpur

This new year I spent at Nagpur...went to a friend's place... apart from the highly amazing culinary experience I have had at my friend's place (auntie has to be the best cook in the world!!!), how was Nagpur?

What really impressed me about Nagpur are the roads. The city is definitely one of the most decorated cities in India. The roads through Seminary Hills and other areas are a pleasure to behold!!! I longed for a nice relaxing drive on those roads, or a casual morning walk (but ALAS!!!).

Places to visit? I wouldn't know, I did not go for much sight-seeing or visiting monuments and places etc...am not that kind of person who would go to Pisa to see the leaning tower or to Paris to see the Eiffel tower. I would rather be in the city and try to get a feel of it...the people, their attitudes etc...In my words, I like to see the soul of the city rather than its made-up face. So what about Nagpur? What is its soul like?

I feel there is some incongruence about the city and its citizens. The city had an air of ‘simple and contended’...or to put it in another way, its quite laid back. I did not feel the aura of go-getter-ness or that feel of a populace marching forward with a purpose. I don’t know...I could be wrong, but that's what struck me the most both times I went there. (Last time I was in the 3rd Year of Engg.)

The city is the centre of India (yes, Nagpur is the geographical centre of India, and there is a post called Zero Mile which is the exact centre of India...and you thought it was somewhere in Madhya Pradesh?? :D). There are a lot of highly important government offices and organisation. It has the National Institute of Direct Taxes (where Income Tax officers are made...I know I should have blown it up...cheh! There is never a bomb when you need one). Besides that there is the RBI which is cashless (no its not BROKE, for heaven's sake!!!) It has only bullion (meaning gold and silver...not sure about the silver though).

Young crowd? Hmm...I would say one thing about Nagpur, its young crowd (at least the majority) seems to be fun loving but we have good children here. Everyone rides a scooty (maybe the only city where scooties outnumber Pulsars), hangs out at Haldiram's joints (mark my word, the food here is awesome!!! I had a dinner at one of Haldiramji's undertaking) and unlike most of the big "hep" cities, at least the general x-section of the young fellas are not hooked on to brands.

The ladies (read girls) are really pretty :) and I have seen so many of them who look really wonderful on a salwar-suit. Very graceful.

All in all, Nagpur isn’t your typical must-visit destination on an India tour but ya...you wouldn’t mind spending some time there ...just for the roads and the Haldiram’s joints....
